In his effort for a viral and rejuvenated Judiciary in the FCT Abuja, the Hon. Chief Judge Hon. Justice I. U. Bello made a historic visit to the Keffi Medium Security Prison as part of his regular visits to the Prison Facilities in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
In his response to the head of the Prison department address, the Chief Judge hinted that the visit was informed by the Government’s policy on the decongestion of Prisons and speedy dispensation of Justice in the FCT.
However the Chief Judge took time to inspect the Keffi Prison facilities where he expressed his displeasure at the deplorable State of the environment and living condition of the inmates. The prison housed currently about 450 inmates for a facility meant for about 150.
He promised to partner with the Prison authorities to increase on the number of visits and to enhance the speedy trials of awaiting trial inmates who are in majority. Thus he revealed his administration’s effort to create the Nyanya/Karu judicial division soonest to give closer and better access to the Court for Keffi Prison facility.
He noted that the FCT Judiciary under his watch is committed to a better administration of Justice and nation building. As against the constant blame of the delay of Justice on the Judiciary, he frowned at the non-diligent attitude of the prosecution at trials and further warned the Magistrates to henceforth stop entertaining Criminal matters above their Jurisdiction on the popular “HOLDING CHARGE” proceeding.
He attended to about 301 waiting trials inmates from the Medium Security Prison and 21 inmates from the old Keffi Prison. 5 (five) inmates regained their freedom on various considered grounds.
